Remembrance Sunday under Covid rules and a project to commemorate "The Fallen"

6th of November, 2020

A Message from Chairman of Mellor Parish Council, Cllr. Nick Marsden:

"Despite the fact that there will be no Remembrance Service on Sunday, I will make sure that the wreath is placed at the War Memorial. It will be an honour to lay the wreath, on behalf of all the residents of the Parish, in memory of those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our freedom. I will also remember those civilians who died as a result of hostilities.

I will also remember those survivors, both in the forces and in the general population, young and old, whose lives were changed irreparably during both world wars and other conflicts. They should not be forgotten.

To possibly stand alone at the War Memorial will be a very strange feeling indeed.

The inscription on the Memorial reads - "1914-1919. This Memorial is erected in proud and loving memory of the men and women of Mellor who gave their lives for freedom. Their names liveth for evermore." Whatever we are doing on Sunday, wherever we are... we will not forget......"

Due to Covid, there will not be a Service this year and all need to ensure social distancing, but will also wish to pay their respects.

It is therefore vital that any who wish to lay a wreath or just spend some quiet period of contemplation due so safely.

The Parish Council has carried out a project to remember all the names of those who gave their lives in the service of our country and to record the names in Books of Remembrance, held at each of the Churches. Many families moved around in the early years of the Twentieth Century, possibly not very far, but across what we now know as the parish boundaries and therefore it seemed appropriate to record all names found - so far that means 101 names! There will soon be a link on this website to show more than just names, but photos and details of who those people were, and that can be added to.

Please have a look, and make contact via the website, or by ringing Parish Clerk 01200 422607 if you want to know more, or if you can add information you know of them, so this will be a lasting memorial and all will continue to remember them.
